Heart Chakra
The fourth chakra is the hinge of the system — the point where the three body chakras meet the three of mind and spirit.
Anahata means 'unstruck' — a sound made without two things hitting each other. The name points at what the heart chakra is for: connection that does not require impact, love that is not a transaction.
The heart is the hinge. Below it sit survival, desire and will — the chakras of self. Above it sit voice, sight and understanding. Everything that moves between those halves passes through the chest, which is why grief feels physical there and why a closed heart flattens both halves at once.
The most common misreading is that an open heart means constant warmth. It does not. An open heart feels grief fully, which is why people close it deliberately after loss. That closure is protective and usually temporary — the work is noticing when the emergency has passed and the door is still shut.
Signs it is blocked
- Warmth that has to be performed rather than felt
- Old grief that has been managed but never finished
- Keeping a tally in relationships
- Difficulty accepting help, care or compliments
Signs of excess
- Giving past your own depletion and calling it love
- Making yourself responsible for other people's feelings
- Forgiving quickly to avoid the discomfort of anger
The practice
Opening the chest physically and letting one thing be felt without fixing it. Breathing into the ribs rather than the belly, arms open rather than crossed, and — the difficult one — receiving something without immediately balancing the ledger.

Heart Chakra affirmations
Affirmations work when they are close enough to true that you do not argue with them. These are written to be sayable rather than aspirational.
Questions
What does the heart chakra do?
It governs love, grief, forgiveness and connection, and acts as the hinge between the lower three chakras of the self and the upper three of expression and understanding. Traditionally it is associated with air and with the centre of the chest.
What are signs the heart chakra is blocked?
Warmth that has to be performed, old grief that was managed rather than felt, scorekeeping in relationships, and difficulty accepting help or compliments. Over-opening looks different: giving past depletion and taking responsibility for other people's emotions.
How do you open the heart chakra?
By opening the chest physically — breathing into the ribs, uncrossing the arms, gentle backbends — and by letting one feeling be experienced without being solved. Traditional practice adds the seed sound YAM and green or pink stones such as rose quartz or green aventurine.
