Root Chakra
The first chakra is about having ground under you — money, housing, health, the sense that you are allowed to take up space.
Muladhara sits at the base of the spine and deals with the least mystical questions in the whole system: is there money, is there a roof, is the body fed and safe. Every tradition that maps energy to the body puts survival at the bottom, because nothing above it holds if this does not.
A root that is working produces a specific feeling that is easy to miss because it is quiet — you are not scanning for threat. Decisions get made on their merits rather than out of fear of losing what you have. The body feels like somewhere you live rather than something you drag around.
The root is also where belonging lives. Not friendship, which is higher up, but the older question of whether you have a place among people at all. Displacement, a move to a new country, losing a family — these hit the first chakra before they hit anything else.
Signs it is blocked
- Money anxiety that does not track your actual balance
- Feeling unwelcome in rooms where nobody has excluded you
- Restlessness, difficulty being still without a screen
- Hoarding — of money, food, objects, or options
Signs of excess
- Rigidity: the same routine defended past the point it helps
- Materialism as identity rather than comfort
- Resistance to any change, including wanted change
The practice
Weight-bearing and slowness. Standing barefoot, walking without headphones, cooking a meal from raw ingredients, sitting with your back against a wall. The root responds to physical evidence, not to intentions — it wants to be shown that the ground is there.

Root Chakra affirmations
Affirmations work when they are close enough to true that you do not argue with them. These are written to be sayable rather than aspirational.
Questions
What are the signs of a blocked root chakra?
Persistent money anxiety unrelated to your actual finances, feeling like an outsider in ordinary situations, difficulty sitting still, and treating minor instability as an emergency. Physically, practitioners associate it with lower back and leg complaints, though that is a traditional correspondence rather than a medical claim.
What colour is the root chakra?
Red — the densest and slowest wavelength in the spectrum, matching the chakra's association with matter, weight and the physical body.
How do you open the root chakra?
Through physical rather than mental practice: weight-bearing movement, contact with the ground, regular meals and sleep, and handling one concrete practical problem rather than worrying about all of them. Traditional practice adds the seed sound LAM and red stones such as red jasper or hematite.
