Sacral Chakra meditation
Warmth below the navel, appetite, letting things move.
Sacral chakra meditation works on the centre that governs pleasure, desire and emotional flow — svadhisthana, seated in the lower abdomen. A blocked sacral rarely announces itself loudly. It shows up as flatness: nothing sounds enjoyable, work is competent and dry, food and touch and colour have all quietly lost volume. The meditation is aimed exactly there, and it is gentler than the root practice — less about weight, more about warmth and movement.
The element here is water, and the practice uses it honestly: not as mysticism but as the quality of movement you are inviting back. Water does not force anything and does not hold still either. Twelve minutes, and unlike the root sit, this one tolerates quiet instrumental music if silence feels clinical.
Posture
Seated, but softer than the root posture — a cushion works well here. Let the belly be loose. Most people hold a low-grade clench in the lower abdomen all day without noticing; the posture for this meditation begins with letting that go, and you may have to let it go several times.
The practice, step by step
Sit, close the eyes, and take stock without fixing anything. Note the state of the lower belly in particular — held, loose, numb, warm. No judgement; this is a reading, and whatever you find is the starting point.
Deliberately release the lower abdomen. Let it be round on the inhale. If it re-tightens — it will — release it again without commentary. This step alone, repeated, is half the meditation.
Bring attention two finger-widths below the navel, inside the body. Rest it there. If nothing is felt, that is common with a blocked sacral — stay anyway. Attention creates warmth in a place the way sunlight does: slowly and without being asked to.
Let the breath become tidal — slightly longer exhale, no holding at either end, continuous like water rather than square like a march. Imagine, if imagining helps, the breath rocking the pelvis by a millimetre. Some people feel actual micro-movement. Both are fine.
VAM, on the exhale, aimed at the lower belly. Softer than the root's LAM — let it be almost lazy. Eight to ten repetitions. If emotion surfaces during this step, let it; the sacral is where feeling moves, and movement is the goal.
Ask, without forcing an answer: what would I actually enjoy today? Not what would be productive or wholesome — enjoy. Take the first honest answer even if it is small or silly. A blocked sacral has usually stopped being asked this question at all.
Open the eyes. Keep the belly loose while you stand — the clench will want its job back within the hour, and noticing it re-form is part of the practice. If step six produced an answer, do the thing today. That is the meditation continuing by other means.

What to notice afterwards
Watch appetite over the following days — for food, colour, company, touch, music. A moving sacral turns the volume back up in small increments: something tastes like something again, a colour catches you for no reason. These are minor events and they are the entire point. Write one down each day if you want the change to be visible to yourself.
If it is not working
The common failure here is numbness — attention goes to the lower belly and finds nothing, session after session. Do not escalate into visualisation to compensate. Numbness is the block, and sitting with it patiently is the treatment; it typically thins over one to two weeks of daily practice. If tears come instead, that is not a malfunction either. Water moves when it is finally allowed to.
Questions
Why do I get emotional during sacral chakra meditation?
Svadhisthana governs emotional flow, and the meditation deliberately loosens the physical holding — the clenched belly — that keeps feeling stationary. When the holding softens, whatever was held moves, and it often moves as tears that have no obvious subject. The tradition treats this as the practice working. You do not need to identify what the emotion is about for it to pass through.
Is sacral chakra meditation about sexuality?
Partly, and less than the internet suggests. The sacral governs desire in the widest sense — appetite for pleasure of every kind, of which sexuality is one region. A blocked sacral usually flattens all of it together: food, play, colour, touch, want itself. The meditation restores the general capacity; where you point it afterwards is your business.
How long until a blocked sacral chakra opens?
In practice-terms: most people who sit daily report the first movement — an appetite returning, an emotion surfacing, warmth becoming feelable below the navel — somewhere in the first two weeks. A long-standing flatness takes longer and is worth pairing with the bluntest question in the practice: what did you stop letting yourself want, and when?
