Solar Plexus Chakra meditation

Heat above the navel, will, the next unstarted thing.

Duration10 min
Seed soundRAM
ElementFire
LocationAbove the navel, below the ribs
GovernsWill, boundaries, self-trust, action

Solar plexus meditation works on manipura, the fire centre above the navel — will, boundaries, self-trust, the capacity to act. Its block has a signature everyone recognises: you know exactly what to do and keep not doing it. Or you agree to things you do not want, apologise for taking up space, and then resent both. The meditation is short and slightly effortful on purpose, because this is the one centre that responds to a bit of deliberate intensity.

Ten minutes. Best done in the morning or before something you have been avoiding — it is a practical meditation with a practical exit: it ends by pointing you at one specific action, and the last step is standing up to do it.

Posture

Seated, spine tall without strain — the posture itself should have a little assertion in it. Imagine the sternum lifted half a centimetre. Hands can rest palm-down on the thighs; palm-down reads as decision better than palm-up here.

The practice, step by step

0:00
Arrive

Sit tall and take three unhurried breaths. Notice the area between navel and ribs — this is where humans physically feel resolve and its absence. Dread, butterflies, the sinking feeling: all local to this strip. You are not imagining the geography.

1:00
Breath of fire, gently

Sharpen the exhale: a short, active push of air through the nose, belly snapping lightly inward, then a passive inhale. Twenty of these, unforced — this is a mild version of a classic heat-building breath. If you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally; mild is the instruction.

2:30
Find the heat

Rest attention above the navel and look for temperature. After the active breath there is usually something feelable — warmth, buzz, presence. Stay with it for a couple of minutes and let it steady. This is the meditation's centre of gravity.

5:00
The seed sound

RAM, on the exhale, aimed above the navel. Give it a little edge — of the seven seed sounds this one is allowed to sound almost like a command. Eight repetitions.

6:30
The one thing

Name the single avoided action that has cost the most this week. Not the whole project — the next physical action: the message, the number, the first sentence. Hold it without arguing about whether you feel ready. The fire centre does not require readiness, only a target.

8:30
Decide once

Say inwardly: when I stand up, I do that first. One decision, made once, in the warm state — not a promise to feel like it later. The whole architecture of this meditation exists to let this sentence be said from heat rather than from guilt.

9:30
Stand up and do it

End the sit and go directly to the named action before anything else — before the phone, before the kettle. The window is about ten minutes wide. This step is not an epilogue; it is the meditation's actual last step, done with the eyes open.

What to notice afterwards

The measure of this practice is external and unmysterious: did the avoided thing get done? Track it for a week — seven sits, seven named actions, however many completions. Even four out of seven changes a person's relationship with their own word. Notice also the 'sorry' count dropping in conversations where you had nothing to apologise for.

If it is not working

Two opposite failures. If the practice makes you agitated and self-critical — fire tipping into excess — drop the breath of fire step entirely and halve the RAM repetitions; the meditation still works as pure attention on the solar plexus. If instead you finish the sit and negotiate your way out of the named action, make the action smaller until refusing it becomes absurd. One sentence. One dial of a number. The size of the step is never the real obstacle, and shrinking it proves that quickly.

Questions

Is breath of fire safe for beginners?

The gentle version used here — twenty light, unforced exhalations — is fine for most people. Skip it if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled blood pressure, a heart condition, or you are prone to dizziness or panic; the meditation works without it. Any light-headedness is the signal to return to normal breathing immediately. Intensity is not the goal; a little warmth is.

Why does solar plexus meditation end with an action?

Because manipura's block is precisely the gap between knowing and doing, a meditation that ends in more knowing would miss the point. The design uses the warm, decided state the sit produces as launch fuel — the tradition would say the fire wants somewhere to go. Completing one avoided action does more for this centre than an hour of additional sitting.

What does a blocked solar plexus feel like day to day?

Procrastination on things you actually care about, saying yes while feeling no, over-apologising, a slumped posture, and a specific sinking sensation above the navel when a demand lands. The excess version exists too: pushing, controlling, running hot at everyone. The meditation is written for the blocked side, which is far more common.
